Start your New Zealaand self drive itinerary in Auckland before driving to Rotorua, home to geothermal activity and Maori culture. Visit the Art Deco capital of Napier before travelling to Wellington, New Zealand's capital city.  Cross Cook Strait on the Interislander ferry and visit Kaikoura, Lake Tekapo and Mt Cook before arriving in Dunedin.  See wildlife and heritage on the Otago Peninsula before taking a cruise on spectacular Milford sound.  Visit Queenstown and the glaciers of the West Coast, then take the famous TranzAlpine train over Arthurs Pass to Christchurch.

Day 1:  Arrive Auckland
Collect your car from the Airport depot and make your way to the city.  Spend the rest of the day exploring the city.  A Hop on Hop off Explorer bus tour is a good option to see the highlights.  Entry to the Sky Tower is included in the package.

Day 2:  Auckland to Rotorua
Drive to geothermal Rotorua. Lord of the Rings fans might like to stop at Matamata enroute to take a tour of the Hobbiton Movie Set.  

Day 3:  At Rotorua
Rotorua is an unforgettable place where geothermal features are the backdrop for adventure activities and Maori cultural experiences.  Enjoy the day by exploring, bathing in soothing hot mineral pools, or be entertained at the Agrodome with a sheep show and shearing demonstration.  

Day 4:  Rotorua to Napier
Travel south to Taupo and stop at the Huka Falls viewing point along the way to see over 220,000 litres of water per second pour over the falls.  Move on to Napier in sunny Hawke's Bay.  Napier is the Art Deco capital and is full of fascinating architecture resulting from the rebuild after a massive earthquake in 1931.

Day 5:  Napier to Wellington
Continue your journey down to Wellington, with a visit to the wine growing region of Wairarapa.  Wander the streets of this quaint wee town and visit one of the wineries within walking distance of the village square.  Approximately 2 hours drive from Martinborough you will be in our capital city.  

Day 6:  Wellington to Kaikoura
Today you have one of the most beautiful short cruises in the world.  Board the Interislander Ferry leaving Wellington Harbour and travelling through the stunning Marlborough Sounds to Picton at the tip of the South Island.  Drive straight on to Kaikoura for an overnight stay.  

Day 7:  Kaikoura to Lake Tekapo
Drive along the coastal highway, past Christchurch on to Lake Tekapo in the heart of MacKenzie Country.  Be sure to visit The Church of the Good Shepherd which sits alone, in a picture-postcard position overlooking the lake.  

Day 8:  Lake Tekapo to Dunedin
Depart Lake Tekapo this morning and drive along the shores of Lake Pukaki to Aoraki Mt Cook. Spend some time exploring Mt Cook Village then travel on to Dunedin.

Day 9:  At Dunedin
Visit Speights Brewery or historic Olveston house.  Take a cruise down the Otago Harbour and see the wildlife at Taiaroa Head, or spend the day on the Otago Peninsula seeing penguins and enjoying an argo adventure.

Day 10:  Dunedin to Te Anau via Invercargill
Depart Dunedin this morning and travel via the Southland region to Te Anau.  Travel south through the towns of Balclutha and Gore before stopping for lunch at Invercargill, the capital of the Southland region.  The town is renowned for its lively cafes, restaurants and bars and has a modern, vibrant heart, along with the heritage character.  Continue on to Te Anau.

Day 11:  Te Anau to Queenstown via Milford Sound
Drive into the Fiordland National Park this morning on the scenic Milford Road.  Be sure to stop for photos on the way at Mirror Lakes and the Lower Hollyford Track.  Travel through the Homer Tunnel and join a nature cruise at Milford Wharf.  After the cruise, drive back out from Milford Sound to Te Anau and follow the shores of Lake Wakatipu to Queenstown.

Day 12:  At Queenstown
Enjoy a free day in Queenstown to do one of the any activities on offer.  Take a jetboat ride on the Shotover River, go whitewater rafting, visit a sheep station, or go hot air ballooning.

Day 13:  At Queenstown
A second day at leisure in Queenstown.  In the evening you will take the Skyline Gondola to enjoy panoramic views on Queenstown while enjoying a scrumptious Taste of New Zealand buffet dinner.

Day 14:  Queenstown to Franz Josef
Stop at Wanaka enroute to see Lake Wanaka or visit Puzzling World.  Then continue via the Haast Pass over to the West Coast. The afternoon at Franz Josef is at leisure.  We recommend either taking a helicopter flight over the glacier or joining a guided walk to the terminal face of the glacier.

Day 15:  Franz Josef to Christchurch 
Depart Franz Josef this morning heading for Greymouth where you will drop off your car and board the TranzAlpine train to Christchurch.  This journey will take you through the Otira Rail Tunnel before crossing a series of viaducts in the Arths Pass National Park before crossing the Canterbury Plains and arriving in Christchurch.

Day 16:  Depart from Christchurch International Airport

Itinerary
