Day 1:  Auckland - Tauranga:  Cycle along Hauraki Rail Trail

Start your New Zealand adventure with an easy cycle along the Hauraki Rail Trail.   This trail showcases some of the best rural scenery New Zealand has to offer and is rich in pioneering history.  After travelling from Auckland to Paeroa on board the Intercity Coach service, you will be cycling through the stunning Karangahake Gorge, one of the 14 Wonders of New Zealand.  If not biking today join the direct Intercity Coach service from Auckland to Tauranga and enjoy the cities growing arts scenery, or visit Mount Maunganui and take a dip in one of the beautiful beaches.


Day 2:  Tauranga - Rotorua

Travel south to Rotorua, the heartland of Maori culture and the geothermal reserves.  Bubbling mud pools and spectacular geysers make the area an exciting place to be.  Tonight you will experience a Maori cultural performance including a Hangi (feast) and concert.


Day 3:  Rotorua:  Mountain bike the Redwoods Forest

Rotorua is a true mountain biking mecca with more than 150km trails through the forest.  Enjoy half a day of mountain biking tailored to your skill and fitness level.  If not biking today there is a vast selection of activities in the area.


Day 4:  Rotorua - Napier

Visit Rainbow Springs and the Kiwi Encounter, and see sheep shearing and working farm dogs at the Agrodome. The afternoon takes you to Napier, the Art Deco capital of NZ, on board an Intercity Coach.


Day 5:  Napier:  Cycle Hawke's Bay trails

Discover New Zealand's oldest wine region with easy riding, grand landscapes and great wineries.  Hawke's Bay is New Zealand's sunniest region so is a fantastic place to enjoy a leisurely day on your bike.  For those that want a rest day we recommend a guided vineyard tour or visit the Gannet Colony at Cape Kidnappers (between October and April).


Day 6:  Napier - Wellington

The day begins with a guided Art Deco walking tour of Napier, then you are Wellington bound on an Intercity Coach.  Our capital city offers a wealth of arts and culture, and a vibrant cafe and restaurant scene.


Day 7:  Wellington:  Rimutaka Cycle Trail

Catch the morning train to Maoymorn, where you will be provided with your bike equipment for the day.  This gentle and well-groomed path winds through the foothills of the Rimutaka Range.Non-bikers might like to take a guided Gourmet Wine tour to Martinborough, or LOTR fans can join a sightseeing tour taking you to various filming locations as well as world-famous WETA Workshop.


Day 8:  Wellington - Picton

Take a morning tour of the city with an optional ride on the cable car to the Botanic Gardens.  The Interislander Ferry will glide you across Cook Strait to Picton for your two night stay.  The journey through Queen Charlotte Sound is one of the most spectacular short cruises in the world.


Day 9:  Marlborough Sounds:  Mountain bike the Queen Charlotte Track or cycle the Blenheim wine region

Take the water taxi from Picton to Torea Bay where you will ride through lush coastal forest, around historic bays and along skyline ridges with views of both the QC and Kenepuru Sounds.  Note that mountain biking on the QC Track is more challenging than other cycling and biking options included in this itinerary.  The trail starts with a tough climb and some walking might be necessary.
Alternatively, enjoy a day of leisurely cycling in the Blenheim wine region.


Day 10:  Picton - Christchurch

Today's journey takes you breathtakingly close to the Pacific Ocean aboard the Coastal Pacific train.  See roaring seas meet enormous bush-clad mountains.


Day 11:  Christchurch - Twizl/Mackenzie Region

Cross the Canterbury Plains to Lake Tekapo, where you will see the iconic Church of the Good Shepherd as it stands in solitude next to the vibrant blue waters.  Continue your journey to Twizel in th heart of the MacKenzie Country for a 2 night stay at Twizel or Aoraki Mount Cook Village.


Day 12:  MacKenzie Region:  Cycle the Alps to Ocean Cycle Trail

Today's cycling option is an absolute must-do!  The Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail is the longest continuous ride in New Zealand taking in some of the country's most incredible scenery.


Day 13:  Twizel - Queenstown

Cross the spectacular MacKenzie Country onboard a Great Sights Coach, passing the growing area of Cromwell and through the Kawarau Gorge on to Queenstown.  Stay 3 nights in Queenstown.


Day 14:  Queenstown:  Cycle the Mountains Cycle Trail

Cruise Lake Wakatipu on the Spirit of Queenstown, a modern catamaran.  Disembark at Mt Nicholas High Country Farm nd cycle along a quiet country road through open farmland.  Later, the remote shingle road levels out and continues over easy terrain alongside the lake.  Watch the landscape unfold in the panoramic alpine views while cycling to Colonel's Homtestead at Walter Peak High Country Farm.  The return to Queenstown is on the TSS Earnslaw steamship.  A ride on the Skyline Gondola is included today.


Day 15:  Queenstown - Milford Sound - Queenstown

Pass through pristine beech forests and the Home Tunnel to enjoy a cruise at Milford Sound.  See the mighty Mitre Peak and Bowen Falls, while enjoying a leisurely lunch.


Day 16:  Queenstown

Itinerary

Day 1:  Auckland - Tauranga:  Cycle along Hauraki Rail Trail
