Travel from Christchurch, through Aoraki National Park and on to the spectacular Southern Lakes area before heading up through the West Coast's rainforests to Greymouth where you will embark the TranzAlpine train taking you back to Christchurch.

Day 1:  Arrive Christchurch
On arrival you will be met at the airport and transferred to your city accommodation.

Day 2:  Christchurch to Aoraki National Park 
Heading inland from Christchurch takes you over the Canterbury Plains with the Southern Alps as a backdrop.  At Lake Tekapo there is a stop for precious photo moments of the stunning lake, and well-photographed Church of the Good Shepherd. Onward to National Park is where you will visit Aoraki Mt Cook Village, at the base of New Zealand's largest mountain.  Time is allowed for you to visit the Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre.  From there you will travel around Lake Pukaki, an astonishing shade of bright blue caused by glacial deposits suspended in the water.  The evening is spent at Omarama.

Day 3:  Omarama to Dunedin
Today's travels take you through the Waitaki Valley to Oamarama, stopping enroute to view the huge spherical boulders at Moeraki, a fascinating collection of "stones" caused by shoreline erosion from the coastal cliffs.  On arrival in the Dunedin you have time to explore this Scottish inspired city before being treated to a traditional Scottish Haggis ceremony, complete with piper.

Day 4:  Central Otago to Te Anau
A guided tour of Larnach Castle is planned for your morning. Built in 1871 William Larnach spared no expense on this dream home for his beloved first wife.  Magnificent architecture houses a unique collection of New Zealand antiques, and the immacutely landscaped gardens have been listed as a "Garden of International Significance".  From Dunedin you will travel through rich farmlands to Fiordland National Park for a two night stay.

Day 5:  Milford Sound Cruise 
Rudyard Kipling described Milford Sound as "the eight wonder of the world" and today is your opportunity to see why.  Soaring forest-clad cliffs, stunning waterfalls and marine wildlife are in abundance, with majestic Mitre Peak high above being the main attraction. The cruise takes you the full length of the fiord with interesting commentary on the history, flora and fauna of the region.  

Day 6:  Te Anau to Queenstown
Your journey now takes you to one of the best-known destinations in New Zealand.  Home of commercial bungy jumping, Queenstown is famous for its outdoor activities, from the extreme to the more laid-back, against a backdrop of stunning mountain ranges and beautiful Lake Wakatipu.  A cruise on the TSS Earnslaw this evening takes you to Walter Peak High Country Station for a gourmet BBQ dinner.

Day 7:  At Queenstown
Today we will leave you to explore this popular resort at leisure.  There is so much to see and do you will be spoilt for choice. Ask your tour guide for advice and bookings.  Don't miss going up on the Gondola for fantastic views.  

Day 8:  Queenstown to West Coast Glaciers
Head past picturesque Lake Hayes to Arrowtown, a historic gold-mining village with a cobbled main street, old stone buildings, boutiques and galleries.  You will pass by pristine lakes at Wanaka, Mt Aspiring and the Westland National Parks before arriving at the glaciers region.

Day 9:  Glaciers to Christchurch
Pull the pennies out of your purse as today you will be visiting a Pounamu (Greenstone) factory.  In Maori culture Pounamu is considered a taonga (treasure), increasing in mana (prestige) as they pass from one generation to another.

On to Greymouth where you'll board the famous TranzAlpine for the four hour journey through the Southern Alps to Christchurch.  Rated as one of the world's most scenic rail journeys, this 224km journey includes 16 tunnels and 5 viaducts. An open air viewing platform is perfect for photo opportunites to capture the spectacular mountains and gorges, river valleys & rolling farmlands of the Canterbury Plains.

Day 10:  Depart Christchurch
Sadly, your time in Aotearoa New Zealand has come to an end.  Say goodbye to your new friends before being transferred to the airport for your flight home.
